Rietondale Park: Winter sport

Thwak! The sound of wood on wood as hockey sticks strike upon one another. There are calls of both children playing and parents who gamely watch from the sides of the field. Intermixed is the firm commands of refereesĀ  and their occasional sharp blasts on the whistle.

To us Resident-Rietondalers this is not the Park at its best as winter holds sway, everything losing it's green except for the blessed evergreen trees. For others however it is sometimes the first time they will come to know our little homely valley. For this is the season of softball and hockey. League and club games make use of the gloriously spacious Rietondale sports fields with children and club members being bussed in from far and wide. Soon the ground virtually vibrates with the thunderous storming back and forth of an army's worth of feet in a battle of manoeuvres. There is laughter, friends and family all about.

And so though the grass is not a favourable hue, the fields are a riot of colour. From team colours to the neon green soccer boots of the player's. And as the days' games come to an end the visitors are bidden farewell by a golden Rietondale sunset.
